Ready to head back to school? It is time to make sure those vaccine records are up to date for you and everyone in your family. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, thousands of adults get sick each year from diseases that vaccines can prevent. August is National Immunization Awareness Month so we thought this would be the perfect time to remind you to get vaccinated and that you can get many of your immunizations at Carolina Convenient Care.
What are Immunizations?
We all need immunization or vaccines to help protect us from serious diseases. This protection is referred to as immunizations. Vaccines are made from very small amounts of weak or dead germs that can cause diseases. The vaccine prepares your body to fight the disease faster to keep you from getting sick.
Infants and Toddlers
Did you know vaccines protect babies from 14 diseases by the time they reach two years of age? It is extremely important that babies receive all doses of each vaccine recommended by their pediatrician and that they receive each of these vaccinations on time.
Whether your child is starting daycare or heading off to college before they leave you need to check their vaccination records. Schools, daycares, camps, and colleges are all prone to disease outbreaks. Not only could your child suffer from serious health issues if they are not vaccinated, many states require that children who are entering child care or school are vaccinated for certain diseases.
Pregnant? Protect Yourself and Pass the Protection on to Your Baby
Women should be up to date on their vaccinations before they become pregnant and should be sure to get pertussis or whooping cough vaccine during pregnancy. If you are currently pregnant, you should also get the flu vaccine if you have not already had it.
In addition to a yearly flu shot, even healthy adults should have their vaccination needs assessed by a doctor. Other common vaccines for adults are TDAP (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) and Shingrix, the shingles vaccines.
Vaccines are Safe
All immunizations or vaccines are thoroughly tested and monitored to ensure they are safe before they are released to the public. Vaccines are also the safest and most effective way to prevent several diseases.
